Paleokastro (Old Castle)
Paleokastro sight is found on the Western side of Ios island in a small hill dominating the islands' coasts and offers openhandedly an unhindered view towards Paros island, Naxos island, Amorgos island and other small Cycladic islands.
According to all the findings the castle was built by the Byzantines and used as a monitoring tower for the maritime passages that led to Crete.
In the Paleokastro sight you will find many parts of the wall still standing, ruins from the buildings inside the castle and the beautiful church of the Virgin Mary of Paleokastritissa.
Paleokastro sight is standing on the road towards Psathi, and a bit before the village on your left hand side you will spot a sign leading you towards the Ancient Castle. You will have to walk up a snake like shaped pathway with loads of small steps to get to it.
