As a model for the design of this open theatre he used Ancient Greek type theatres found on the Greek islands and Southern Italy. Odysseas Elytis Theatre can welcome 1100 spectators on its marble seating area.

Other structural elements dominating the structure of the theatre is locally quarried stone. The theatre is a unique treasure to Ios island and hosts numerous cultural events nowadays. It upgraded the beautiful region of Tsoukalaria an area which unfortunately in the past few decades used to be a garbage dump. The orchestrural space of the theatre is 12 meters in diameter. The positioning of the seating area looking towards the South offers spectators an amazing view towards the lively Aegean Sea and at the same time protects them from the summery strong North winds that blow frequenlty on the island.
